Video Short: Capturing Live Takes in Studio One

Introducing the new Video Shorts segment. I’m presenting video How-To tutorials on various topics around my studio. This short focuses on capturing each “take” of a live band’s performance within Presonus Studio One. I could have just hit record and let the tape roll for the whole hour but I wanted to quickly organize and separate each performance. This is the way I chose to do it. You should be able to reproduce this tutorial within in most DAWs.

The band I was recording wanted to record and mix a song for their new video. The recording took place in their back yard. So we mic’ed everything as we normally would in the studio except we knew we would get a lot of mic bleed all around so isolation wasn’t a high priority. But that’s ok because the goal here is to capture each performers part as a complete band performance (take). Since the band is playing live, there is no click track and each “take” doesn’t really line up with the other previous takes because of the fluctuating tempos. But again, we’re not “comping” here. Just capturing the overall performance quickly and efficiently. Afterwards, we listen to each performance (take) and decide which is the best and begin to edit.

Feel free to leave comments below. I’d love to hear from you.
